Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a form of polyester and plastic resin. It is a polymer that is formed by the combination of two monomers: modified ethylene glycol and purified terephthalic acid.

PET is a plastic that is labelled with the #1 code on or near the bottom of bottles and containers, and is a commonly used plastic in the packaging of water, soft drinks, juices, salad dressings and oil, cosmetics, and household cleaners. Its strength, transparency and thermo-stability make PET a popular packaging option for food and non-food products. PET is inexpensive, resealable, lightweight, shatter-resistant and recyclable. PET recycling is used to manufacture a wide variety of new products, including fibre for polyester carpets.
